How To Ruin Peoples Fun & Misunderstand the law!

December 16th, 2007 By Nicholas James

Richter Scales created a video for Techcrunch called “Here Comes Another Bubble” which went viral got taken off Youtube due to a stupid misunderstanding with the law by Lane Hartwell - http://fetching.net/

Don’t worry, its popping up all over the net to ensure that this video is staying up :), its one of the funniest video you can ever see and is well worth watching.

The person who got it taken down was a photographer called Lane Hartwell who had taken one of the photos which was the video. She complained that she wasn’t paid for her work and hired a lawyer with Richter Scales taking the decision to take it down rather than fight that Hartwell had no right to stop them from using the image.

However, TechCrunch discussed the issue with a copyright attorney and described the facts to him:

“He confirmed my thoughts on the matter. Copyright is a structure around prohibitions, not permissions, he says. That means it lays out rules for things people cannot do with your work - it does not give you the right to demand permission before any use is made.”

So if you want to ruin everyone’s fun and misunderstand the law then follow Lane Hartwell, Otherwise, appreciate the fact that your video is part of a viral success!

Since, she got the original Youtube video taken down, it has been re-uploaded throughout the net and here is a live link you can view it at:
