Everyone can linkbait

October 24th, 2007 By Nicholas James

Since posting a post about linkbait, I thought that I should explain how anyone and everyone can linkbait. One prime example, that comes to my mind how anyone can get linkbait is having a website which people find humorous as this type of website can easily attracts links. However, since most websites aren’t always humorous I decided to state other methods of linkbait which will allow anyone and everyone to make their site a “link magnet”.

Step 1. Domain Name

The golden rule is to keep your domain name short so people can remember it.

Why? Well  because a domain is your piece of “online real estate” and you need a short, brandable one as its your asset for drawing links. Since there are millions of websites, you need a great domain name so people can actually remember your website.

Here’s a little calculation you should remember too:

Rememberable Domain = People Visit.
More Visitors = Increased % you will receive a backlink.

Step 2. Website Design

Why do you think website ares all upgrading to web 2.0? Well this answer is simple because,  a well-designed site will always get more links as people love linking to websites that look nice! Obviously you will get exceptions to the rule the main one I can comment being an exception to this rule would be Myspace.

So if you are going to be using the Internet as a form of business, you must have a great website design (I will discuss website design in more detail on a later post.)

Step 3. Unique ContentPeople consider that content is king, as they claim you can have the worst design and still get links with good content. However, what I am talking about here is creating content that no one else is creating. I’m not talking about making content via editing someone else’s enough to avoid Googles duplicate content penalty. Why? Well this answer is simple to because like Google have a duplicate content penalty there is also one where no-one will be linking to you if you are writing the same content.

Remember another golden rule, know your niche well. If you know your niche well then you can think about the content you wish people were creating in your niche. Once you know this then you can create that content.

Summary

Well here’s my first ever summary on a post but since, I’ve made a couple of golden rules to remember I didn’t want people to forget them. So I thought I should recap on the post instead but showing a prime example.

Prime Example: E-Commerce. Amazon don’t try to copy them because, unless you’ve got an amazing marketing plan which no-one else has used and you can get for virtually free or have buckets of cash then your not really going to take the market which they are major players in. What you should be doing is like Woot.com where they realised instead of beating Amazon they would target it another way and gain a large market share simply by targeting the market a different way.
